Last week we had a fun little traitorous conversation on this blog about fruit we don't like, to put it mildly. Yesterday evening I was sitting there with my 1 lb bag of okra (which is actually classified as a FRUIT, by the way) and wondering why so many I've talked to think it's so nasty and vile.
It made me upset, so I thought today I'd take the opportunity to make fun of some of YOUR favorite veggies. Shall we discuss the veggies we think are gross (particularly when eaten uncooked)? :)
Here are my top four. I have not touched ANY of these in at least 16 months.
Kale
I used to force feed this to my family and myself. All because of a book I read called Super Baby Food, written by a vegetarian Mom of twin boys, Ruth Yaron.
She used to be my hero when my boys were babies, and although I do not agree with her health philosophy anymore, I still appreciate her efforts to make her idea of healthy eating go mainstream.
But! But! It was because of her that I forced buckets and buckets of kale into my poor mouth. She swore that kale was the secret to health (or something like that) :) because it apparently has such a high level of calcium.
She even said somewhere in her book that her insurance company lowered her premiums because she ate soooo much kale, even drinking the leftover "juice" in the blender from making her kids' kale baby food.
Just thinking about it today makes me turn green. Now, I have to say, cooked kale ain't THAT bad. First of all, cooking it makes it shrink from a formidable mountain into just some marshy flatlands. Second when you add tomato sauce, salt or oil to anything cooked it of course makes it go from gross to gourmet in 30 seconds.
But raw kale just tastes nasty in my mouth and it doesn't feel great digesting in my stomach either. I'll be happy if I never have another bite of kale ever again. At least my gag reflex got a good workout back when I used to eat it, I guess.
Broccoli
I liked cooked broccoli. Loved it, in fact. All nice and tender and juicy. But raw broccoli is something else. It tastes so green in not a good way. Also it is tough and mealy and makes me feel like I'm eating a baby tree. I swear I'd hear them screaming with terror as I crunched into them. It gave me guilt trips every time.
Carrots
Now carrots are something else. I actually like the taste of them. One of my favorite childhood memories is my Mom chopping up veggies in the kitchen, and slipping me bits of them before they went in to the wok. Carrots used to be my favorite raw veggie.
I ate truckloads of carrots when I was a kid. We went through this phase where my Mom made me carrot juice every single day because my eyesight was horrible and she read that the vit A would help that. (No, it didn't.) It tasted pretty okay, though.
The reason I don't eat carrots nowadays, is because they hurt me when I eat them. I think they are too starchy for my digestive system to handle now. It's a surefire tummyache for me if I eat more than one or two baby carrots. So I just abstain. But I don't miss them all that much...
Random embarassing fact: I used to really think that baby carrots were...well...baby carrots. :)
Artichokes
Yeah yeah, I know they taste good swimming in butter and garlic, but have you ever TRIED a raw artichoke? 'Nuff said.
Eating what I like. Hurrah!
Basically with veggies, I find that the fruit veggies and the tender leafy greens taste best AND digest best for me. So I tend to stick to those. I'm game to try other things occasionally, but most of the other things taste tough and gross to me. So I rarely bother. :)
What about you? Which veggies do you absolutely think are icky raw, and did you like them cooked before?

When Your Mama Told You to Eat Your Veggies...

19 rotten tomatoes:
Kale for sure is one I have attempted at putting into my raw repertoire but just can't. It turns black and tastes nas-assty.
I do like raw broc however, but haven't had it in a year...huh go figure.
I would say probably brussel sprouts are the grossest. I have tried them steamed but *haha I said steamed but* they taste like sulfur. I guess the only way to avoid that is to harvest them and then cook them like, 20 minutes later and they are supposed to be divine.
I still enjoy eating kale, broccoli and carrots. Little amounts, but still. And I do believe they have some nutritional value. I occasionally will even have a kale salad with avocados, and kale-fruit smoothie is delicious. What is wrong with it? These veggies and celery are the only ones my 2 1/2 year old will eat sometimes. She mostly eats fruits, and still doesn't enjoy/can't really chew leafy greens. Should I not give this to her?
Oh man this hits a chord:
Kale FOR SURE- despite everyone raving about it. Can't stand it.
Artichokes are a no-brainer, there's no way to eat them raw.
Broccoli is ANOTHER ditto - I can't stand it. (And I'll admit, I still eat these things cooked, because I figure eating them cooked is better than not eating them at all. As far as I know the MINERALS aren't hurt by heat, and I want the calcium etc)
Brussel Sprouts. Omg. I LOVE brussel sprouts cooked, but raw - no thanks.
I'll have to find me some okra now, I've never tried it! what is it?! LOL! I'll google it.
fun post : )
For me, the first thing that came to mind is
1. Brocolli/cauliflower
I'm eating my own purple sprouting brocoli steamed atm, and it is delicious. Raw? Just can't stand the taste.
2.Onion/leek/garlic
ok is that naughty to put 3 in one line? But these are too strong and I just don't eat them raw.
3.Sweet Potato
A member of the bindweed family and not a potato at all. Soo powdery when raw, yuck.
4.
Hmm having difficulty now...
don't really like courgette raw - but not ready to put that on the list yet, I think I want to marinade it as courgettie first, I think I'll like that.
Nope can't think of a forth, kale is kinda bad, but not tooo bad shredded up.
I don't know, swede or something boring like that, or a turnip - can't imagine they are nice raw, haven't really tried them. I need to try more veg!!
I'm with you on the broccoli. GAG! I never liked it cooked either. If you think about it, people usually eat raw broccoli smothered in ranch dressing. I can't get into raw corn either. Many years of eating it covered in butter, salt, pepper and a squeeze of lime ruined my taste buds.
Not a fan of eggplant, cooked or uncooked. It's pretty to look at but after that it's just gross.
I've only had kale when it's been juiced and mixed with other things so I've no idea if I'm board with your or not on this. I've been hesitant to make a kale salad and not because of your post. :)
Broccoli - no to raw! I've never liked them uncooked. And as far as cooked goes I only like them steamed so the "rawness" is steamed away but they're still crunchy. Soggy broccoli is gross too.
Carrots - raw only. Okay, if i had steamed veggies this would be okay but again don't like them mushy and definitely prefer them raw.
Mushrooms - KEEP THEM AWAY!
Cilantro - GROSS!
Before, when I cooked some of my veggies, I would eat (eyes wide with disbelief) brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and sweet potatoes, but now that I'm 100% raw, they no longer see the light of day in my kitchen, which is kind of a shame because I liked them cooked. Come to think of it, I only liked them cooked because I added some nuts and grated cheese or cream cheese! *shudder*
As for baby carrots ...
Baby carrots: why oh why don't you eat us anymore? (zoom in on pouty faces)
Me: hey babes, you just too starchy for me now. I much prefer somethin' more digestible, like baby cukes, you dig? And besides, I can get my vitamin A from bell peppers, which come in a variety of colors!
Baby carrots (zoom in on scrunchy faces): not fair! Not fair! Can we help it if we're just a buncha mineral storage devices?!
Me: babes, it ain't the end of the world, ya know. You do what you do best and I'll just keep eatin' my baby cukes. k?
Baby carrots: Nooooooooooooooo!
Gotta agree with you on the kale. Yuk! I've never liked it any way I've tried it, even smothered in sauce! I also don't like broccoli raw, but I hated it cooked, too. Makes me gag! I always felt guilty when I was vegan/veg because broccoli was supposed to be this super healthy virtuous food and I hated it. I don't really like any veg (apart from lettuce and non-sweet fruits that are considered veg).
Whatever hiho. lolol
Oh how I love okra. I think I will be heading to the store tonight for some.
But I remember visiting my cousins in the south and having deep fried okra, sooo goood but sooo bad.
I also use to eat pickled orka.
I used to eat and love all veggies but now stick with the ones that taste good raw.
Kathleen
The number one raw veggie I avoid is raw broccoli. The last time I ate raw broccoli, I was sick for several hours. I know there wasn't anything wrong with the broccoli, other family members ate more than I did and were fine. It's just too difficult to digest. I used to love it steamed or in casseroles.
I don't believe mushrooms can be considered a vegetable, but I can't stand them raw. The flavor grosses me out. I loved them cooked.
I don't like any kind of bitter green (kale, turnip greens, etc). Give me tender, sweeter greens (leaf lettuce, romaine, spinach, etc)
Red Radishes and Onions are veggies that I've never liked raw. I still don't. I've never tried artichokes, and I don't plan to. I don't dislike carrots, but I'm not too fond of them. I may have a couple baby carrots every 2 or 3 months. Not regularly. Just off a veggie tray at a party or something.
I absolutely LOVE okra. I had some yesterday, but now I'm out. I've got to find more soon :)
Yep, I agree 100%. Never liked kale, even when it is cooked. I used to love broccoli and and artichokes, but definitely not in their raw states. I loved carrots when I was a child, so much so that I turned orange for a short time! But now, too starchy and all that chewing makes me gag.
Right now, I'm really diggin' my tomato-mango-lime "salsa." I love tomatoes!!!! :)
Sam, how could I forget brussel sprouts? I find them intensely digusting too.
Anonymous, if you enjoy kale and it doesn't give you digestive issues, keep enjoying it! I just happen to not like it at all. As far as kids - I'm not expert but I tend not to give my kids certain food until they can chew and digest it themselves. But that's just me, different things work for different people. :)
newsupey, you don't know what okra is? Well are you in for a nice little treat. We hope. :) Let me know if you try it!
Azura, I think it's brilliant that you never liked onion or garlic. I was very hooked on both of those and it was a tough addiction for me to break!
Exotic, I looooove raw sweet corn but I wish I could just grow it in my garden and eat it truly fresh. I plan to, some day. Did you like corn cooked? Corn (cooked or raw) was practically a food group all by itself of mine for a long time! In college I'd eat cans of corn for meals. LOL
Rosie, I have a love-hate relationship with mushrooms. I loved them cooked, didn't mind them raw, but more and more get grossed out by them if I ever eat them.
Chris...LOL... :) You ever considered starting a blog? You could amuse us with your little veggie dialogs all day long. :)
Margi, I'm realizing more and more than I'm not super big on veg either. I really do love my non sweet fruits.
Kathleen - I did use to like fried okra but have to admit I never tried pickled. That's probably a good thing, huh? One less thing to miss. :)
Sarah, I have tried several raw veggies over the last year that made me sick too. Asparagus, even though I loved it, made me nauseous for hours.
Swayze, I'm a tomato pig too. Esp grape tomatoes. I can sit there and eat 4 lbs of them in a sitting. :'(
Baby carrots aren't baby carrots??
Just tried okra today-sorry, but YUCK!
Baby carrots to Sarah: Yeah, and you might also tell him to give us starring roles! Eat us! Eat us!
That bunch of kale pictured in your post...I would NOT eat raw. However, baby kale, grown in my own garden, specifically Red Russian Kale, now that's a whole different story, nothing bitter about it (especially if you live in a cooler climate where it develops a nice mild flavor.) Personally, I find it to be one of the best tasting greens out there. Even my kids like the flavor, although they aren't big on the texture of greens yet.
Sally-Anne, are you jesting with me or is that a serious question? :) If it's serious - I thought I was the ONLY one who thought baby carrots were baby carrots!
Via - I guess I just have better taste. Haha j/k!!! :) Did you try the really young tender crunchy ones?
Chris - you could go on like this forever, couldn't you? :) Just a hunch. LOL!
Anonymous - you brought up a great point, thank you. I've never grown greens and I can totally see that young baby kale could possibly be tasty and more digestible than tough old commercialized kale. :)
I love kale, but only if it's wilted and coated with oil, salt, and lemon. :-P So, I guess I don't really like kale, but I do eat it.
I'm having a hard time thinking of something I don't like at all, but one thing I do LOVE raw is asparagus. I loved it canned as a kid, steamed when I was older and out on my own eating healthier, and now raw. I love, love, LOVE it!
Carrots are difficult for me to eat most times, unless they are mixed with something else and the flavor doesn't overpower the dish. I used to love them before I was pregnant, but after I was pregnant, the odor of carrots causes a burning sensation in my nose and I just can't eat them anymore on their own.
I think I would love raw okra. I had no idea it was a fruit, but now that you said it...it makes sense! I'll try some raw the next time I see it at the food co-op.
I love raw beets, too.
Well, right now I can't think of anything I don't like. :-P I guess maybe I'm a tiny bit hungry. How long have I been going through your blog to catch up? It's been a LONG time, I think! LOL
Lots of love to you!
Wendi
