Calling all traitors - which fruit do you dislike?

This topic is probably just slightly taboo for a blog focused on a fruitarian/raw vegan lifestyle, but after recently having been asked the question myself, I have to ask you all too:

Which fruit do you not like, at all?

In the last year, I have consumed a verrrrry long list of fruit when it comes to variety. However, when I sat down and thought about it, there are 2 fruits that I simply haven't touched at all, and 2 more which I've had a couple of times and that's it. I wouldn't be shocked if my tastes changed down the line, but til then, I'm just not touching them.

Here's my list and why I don't like them. If they are your favorites, you'll have to come to their defense and convince me with reasons to give them a try again!

Honeydew melon
Yeah, seriously! I know everybody loves these but for one thing it's difficult to find a good one, and then when I do, they are soooooooo sweet they almost give me a toothache, and I'm used to eating sugar all day long! Something about the texture turns me off too.

(Ruthie, this one is for you...)

Cantaloupe

Not only do they go moldy fast, the insides also turn mushy fast. And something about the strong smell is yucky to me. I'm tempted to tell you what I think it smells like, but if you're a cantaloupe lover you'd be likely to want to stab my eyes out. So I will resist.

Kiwi
I think kiwis look adorable, all brown and fuzzy and puppy like. But that's about it. The taste and smell also reminds me of something undesirable and again I am refraining from telling you what, lest I unleash a mob of angry kiwi fans on myself. Oh, and, they shed hair all over my kitchen counters. Worse than my dogs and cat. And I don't need more pets.

Grapefruit
I actually like the taste and smell of grapefruit in theory. I love anything with a hint of tartness to it, like citrus and tomatoes. And as you all know - and if you didn't, you do now - Texas is known for their amazing and abundant grapefruit. I've tried different varieties - ruby red, sweet, white, giant...with the same affect every single time - they leave me nauseous for hours.

I can tolerate a bit of grapefruit juice when I mix it with orange juice. But for whatever reason, drinking a moderate to large amount of it in a sitting, really makes me feel sick to my stomach. Anyone else have this experience? It actually disappoints me as I truly like the taste of sweet, tart grapefruit juice. Oh, and it's worse if I eat it straight without juicing it.

I think this means I'll never be able to pass for an authentic Texan gal no matter how hard I try. That and my dark skin and asian features apparently are a dead giveaway, every time. Dang it!

So those are my four. Feel free to convince me otherwise, I'm always open to trying things again.

Do you have any fruit that you just do not care for? I want to know what it is! Unless it's mango, durian, tomatoes or persimmons - I have seriously deep and passionate feelings for those four fruit and whenever people tell me they don't like them I tend to start feeling violent. Just to warn ya.

Aww, I love all the fruits you mentioned, even if you think they smell like rotting corpse or a poopy diaper left in a humid dumpster. I am thoroughly offended...(not really) ;)

I do not really care for: papaya (smell/texture combo really gets to me), canistel/eggfruit (it was just too thick, dry, and pasty in my mouth), pear (taste/texture), kumquats. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, LOL. :)

I actually like all those fruits you mentioned, especially cantaloupe and grapefruit, but I do know what you mean about the cantaloupe and it's "musky" smell.

I love the taste of grapefruit, but at the same time it leaves a "bile" aftertaste in my throat. For some reason this doesn't bother me.

Have you ever had a chance to try durian? I have never been courageous enough to try it, after experiencing it's unbelievably hideous smell.

I'm right there with you on the grapefruit. If I eat one, I actually feel like my mouth tastes like vomit! sorry to say.
You should try a pomello - a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit. Lovely.

Pomegrantates.
more work that they are worth!

I'm sorry = but mango makes my belly burn! and the taste is really fuzzy - maybe I've never had a good one.
although i do like it with banana all mixed up (please don't get mad!) hehe

dragon fruit
er - boring! beautiful, yes, but as bland as a beige boardroom on a wet tuesday afternoon.

I haven't tasted enough fruits to have a more varied list : )

good post!
AS - also a traitor to the cause? : ))

First time comment to say... I HATE watermelon. I do. Always have while you seem to love them so much and spend time talking about every aspect of watermelon. Yuck.

I'm mildly allergic to pineapple, mango and papaya. But that doesn't stop me from eating them almost everyday. Doctor says I'm probably fine and I always stop when my tongue gets too numb.

Love the blog!

I never liked honey dew or cantaloupe until we grew it in our garden one year. When they are truly ripe and warm from the sun, they taste amazing! The ones from the grocery store I like now, but they aren't even half as tasty as warm, fresh ones from the garden.

I don't really care for watermelon all that much. It always looks so good, and the first few bites taste good, but then I'm just eating it to eat. I'm not overly crazy about it.

Grapefruits are YUCK, YUCK, YUCK to me! I just can't get beyond the bitter taste--it stands out too strong in my mouth and I just don't like it. They smell and look great, however!

I'm not super in love with fruits--I'm learning to like them, since I want to eat more in line with 811rv to see how it feels. I do love cherimoyas, however, if they are fully ripe. Bananas are great if they aren't from Dole (even the organic ones taste a bit strange to me).

Hey Sarah!
First i need to tell you how much fun it is to read a new post every day! Are you going to continue doing that? Otherwise don't tease us,girl! Love your blog!
I completely agree with the dislike for cantalope and kiwi.
Should defend the honey dew though. When it is true is not a perfect fruit all the time it is the only fruit in addition to cantalope and watermelon you can find at the Old Country Buffet.(BTW, watermelon still gives me backache and cantalope...you've said it already, I never buy it.) So I have to put up with it out of necessity.
I also really don't care for the strawberries, blueberries and especially BLACKBERRIES! Horror sour! I understand they all could be wonderful if properly ripen but not on the supermarket shelf. You may call me anti-fruit now...
So, my favorite is persimmon, mango and honey tangerines. Class, what do these three have in common?
You guessed it: sweet and beautiful!

Harmony, one of these days I'm gonna get you to love papaya. :)

Carol, I grew up in Malaysia, which is durian land! :) I loooooove it. LOOOOOOVE. My Dad says it's like biting into a big juicy bag of trash though (because of the smell). LOL!

Azura, good ripe mango should be creamy and perfectly sweet! Mmmmm.

Oh, and I really do love pomellos! I ate a lot of them this winter.

Ruth, thanks for commenting! I'm sorry though, if you don't like watermelon we can't be friends. Just kidding. :) I'll put a big warning at the top of the page for you next time I decide to carry on incessantly about watermelon again. Haha!

Wendi, I'm taking your advice about garden grown melons to heart! I will try them again...when I can plant them.

Luba, you crack me up. Oh, and those 3 fruit you mention are also all orange in color! :) I do love honey tangerines (and mango and persimmon) too - I just tried the tangerines for the first time this year. I could not believe how exquisite they tasted!

Very interesting to me how many ppl are not crazy about grapefruit either!

Lisa, aka Pixywinks said...

OK I have to disagree with everyone on the grapefruit. I could almost LIVE on ruby reds. In fact, I probably mostly did last winter and drank a LOT on my Juice Feast. I've never liked papaya; I can't seem to acquire a taste for durian, however, I do love the creamy texture. Honeydews and kiwis are pretty low on my list, but I do think kiwis have a taste of strawberry in them, and I love strawberries, but the fuzz on the kiwi is hard to deal with. Cantaloupe, I do like a lot if they are perfectly ripe. Kumquats burn my mouth OFF!
I love berries of ALL kinds.

Really...cantaloupe and honeydew??? I love them! For dinner tonight I had two small extra-ripe cantaloupes, with just the tiniest bit of mold on the skin...just delicious! The flesh was nice and sweet and juicy and soft. I tend to get "melon belly" quite often. ;)

In case you decide to try honeydew again, look for a melon that is heavy for it's size, cream to yellow in color and with veins all around the melon that you can feel to the touch. This helps me pick a nice one! :)

I do not care for kiwi, star fruit (although I loved it when I was a child), kumquats, pomegranates and...PERSIMMONS!!!!! Actually, I only just tried them last year at the beginning of my transitioning. I'm pretty sure they were not quite ripe. I look forward to giving them another go this fall. :)

I refuse to eat grapefruit. I never liked it, but I tried it once this summer just to see if maybe my tastes had changed. It was horrible.

I LOVE cantaloupe, especially warm out of the garden. I will admit that they can be gross if not they aren't perfecly ripe.

I don't care too much for honeydew melon, but I will eat it on occasion if it's available at a potluck or something. I don't buy it.

I don't really care for kiwi much either, but my family loves it.

I don't really like pomellos either. I only tried them once, so maybe I will give it a try again. I'll usually try something 2-3 times before giving up on it.

Durian is awesome!!! I just finished eating some about an hour ago. I love it!!!

HiHoRosie said...

Not fans of cantaloupe or grapefruit. Never have been. However, having them in things or forcing myself to drink some (hee hee) makes me feel good, especially grapefruit. Just wish I could get past the taste.

I don't like most berries either. I LOVE strawberries but despise raspberries and blueberries. I know everyone will think I'm nuts but I'm used to it. :)

Margi said...

Completely agree with you on the kiwi and grapefruit. Yuck! But I don't mind honeydew, and I *love* cantaloupe. Cantaloupe, watermelon and strawberries are probably my favourite thing about summer. But I have to add my own hate in: plums. Gross!!!! They aren't sweet at all and the texture is all wrong. I also don't like mango unless it's frozen! :)

Honey Dew, oh Honey Dew, you know you only think you love Crenshaw; come on, baby, don't say you can't elope with me. You just know I'm good for ya. Come on, sweetheart, let's go feast on some grapefruit, and while we're at it, let's play with some Kiwi. Trust me, honey, oh honey dew, I promise I'll stay fresh for ya. What do ya say, my honey precious?

Dear Sarah,
interesting about the Grapefruit. Grapefruit is the only fruit, I have tried, that I cannot eat.
I do not dislike its taste as such; it is just when I eat it my mouth goes all horrid and furry and dries out.
I have tried several times as I find its smell appealing and do like the taste before my mouth gets attacked!
love to you,
from Anne XX.

Lovely post, keep up the fun blog work!
Personally, I misjudged a few fruits myself before traveling a bit and getting to know them better. As it turns out, there is usually more than 1 kind of anything, this includes fruit. I thought I hated papaya (it tastes and smells like vomit, seriously), only to find out I hated caucho papaya, the giant red oblong kind in Mexico - but I absolutely love strawberry papayas, the small round ones, in Hawaii. Yellow kiwis are much more "hairless", are firmer and more tart and taste much better; I enjoy Ataulfo and Tommy Akins mangoes alike; I don't like Florida avocados at all, but the other ones are great; and apple bananas, red bananas, and monkey bananas are WAY better than the standard kind. So maybe you just need some sub-species to try?
As for the grapefruit, I will only eat the ruby red kind, (organic and in season) and I'm still not crazy about them. I usually juice them with oranges to decrease the bitterness, since everyone else seems to think grapefruits are a wonder food!
Good luck. :-D

I've gotten to where I can eat honeydew and cantaloupe now, but I used to hate them. They had such a perfume-like smell, and the texture sometimes gave me the creeps. I've gotten where I like them well enough now, but I pretty much never buy them myself.

I ABHOR grapefruit. Have never liked it and have no desire to try to.

I've always liked kiwi a lot, but lately have developed a reaction to them. My upper lip burns if I eat them, even if I eat only a little. I even tried putting them in a smoothie, where the amount was small compared to other fruits, and my lip still burned. Don't know what's up with that.

Ana said...

You know, I used to have this HUGE problem with papayas...they were AWFUL...tasted like, hem...vomit!! No matter how many times I tried them, I would have the same gross reaction. I even had my grocer pick one out for me, cos I thought I was picking rotten ones. but no use. His was awful, too! But...then...this past year, I fell in LOVE with papayas! So much so that I dream about them at night and conspire how I can get more, more, more! I have two great large Mexican papayas on my kitchen counter right now, waiting to be devoured.

I've thought about this and concluded that maybe it has to do with what nutrients I might need...perhaps I had an overage of papaya's critical nutrients, so my body rejected it? And now my body needs it? Oh, I don't know!

The other fruit I just can't abide is tangerines--it's like eating citrus skins---really bitter!!

Lisa, good thing you live in Ruby Red state then. :)

Martin - yeah - anyone who doesn't like fuyus can't be my friend. Sorry. Hahaha! :)

Swayze, another persimmon hater, really? What gives! You persimmon haters need to try hachiya persimmons, they are my favorites. They are like sugar jelly. And thanks for the honeydew tips.

Sarah, for some reason warm melon sounds unappealing to me, but it makes sense since they do grow in very hot seasons. So I will give it a try sometime, I swear. And, we can be friends since you are a durian lover. :)

Hihorosie, I don't go for berries either, but I really think it's because I've never had them truly wild and ripe and fresh. What do you think?

Margi, actually, I'm not a big fan of plums either! But I don't understand the not-liking-mango thing. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU! :) Haha just joking.

Ruthie, so does it drive you crazy to read my blog and see photos of your favorite fruit (not) everywhere on the page? :)

Chris, lol, you're funny! Have you ever tried a Crenshaw? I haven't.

Anne, isn't it interesting how many people have had similar reactions to grapefruit so far?! It makes me wonder! Hmm!

Jenevieve, I totally agree with you. I like apple bananas a lot, and I've been hearing about ice cream bananas, which make me drool just thinking about them. Also, being from a tropical country, I have had access before to many different fruits and different varieties of them, and I do see your point. Someone told me recently about all the kiwi varieties and it was quite enlightening. :)

Earthchick - perfume like smell - very interesting! I get that esp from honeydew.

Ana, I've done the EXACT same thing with papaya. I haven't had any in a few months, but in January and February I could not get enough of them. And sometimes, when they do smell like vomit to me too. LOL!

luba said...

Sarah, this exchange of opinions was eye opening, we are not that different after all! Hahaha!Sarah, would it be fun to do similar post about veggies and such? I know you wanna do it!
BTW, my $20 watermelon was not spectacular but decent melon, very sugary in the middle. I ate about a pound of it and sure enough the backache came two seconds after I finished my last piece. I am pretty positive it is not a "melon belly". I have not eaten enough for this. Oh,well another 811 mystery..

Michele said...

I am amazed at all the comments. I ate case after case of grapefruits - usually juiced (including all the pulp), but sometimes just peeled and eaten. You should try a blended cantaloupe. Very yummy. And kiwi mixed with tangerines - awesome.
I can't think of any fruit I just don't like, although there are occasional instances of something that is not ripe enough or too ripe that doesn't taste too good. I have to blend bananas, when they are ripe enough the texture is just too squishy.
My biggest fault is probably not enough variety, although I'm working on it. I had a feast of two giant cherimoyas the other day. It was heaven, but I wished for a third!
I'm about to go open up a 26 pound watermelon!

I can't eat grapefruit either. It makes my tummy feel all quesy for hours! I like the taste of it though.

i am with you on the honeydew. bleh...something about it just doesn't taste/feel quite right. i like cantaloupe ok, especially if it's from my dad's garden. love kiwi although it sometimes makes my mouth feel a little raw, and love red grapefruit, even though it's annoying to eat.

i am really not a fan of star fruit, maybe because i just don't know how to eat them properly, but really, i don't see the point. it seems like a gimmick fruit or something, like, the best thing about it is how pretty it looks on stuff.

and prickly pear...such a weak flavour, weird texture with the seeds and everything, and i always ALWAYS get the darned spines stuck in my skin.

Rachel said...

I do not like any melons besides watermelon...it's the texture mainly!! YUCK!!! And there is a type of papaya...can't think of it now, that is just disgusting!!!! The smell...well, to me, it's...it's...it's worse than the smell of a durian!!!!!!! Don't hit me, I like durians too!! But they ARE stinky.

Sarah said...

Luba I'm so curious about your problems with watermelon! How strange. Yes I should do a post on veggies sometime :)

Michele, I'm glad you don't have a problem with the grapefruit. I wonder if I don't ever eat them ripe enough or something.

Katie, starfruit is not a favorite, but I like it fair enough - but you have to get really good ones, then they taste rather like an apple, only softer. :) I used to like starfruit juice as a kid in SE Asia.

Rachel, papaya CAN tend to smell nasty! I agree. I go through spurts of wanting it exclusively, and then not wanting it for awhile. :)

birthblessed said...

I love love grapefruit and ate 20 lbs a week all winter. And I like cantaloupe but will freely admit it smells like baby poop, like really young baby who only gets breastmilk. I like honeydew but find it hard to find a really good one, too. I don't like kiwi much because they have a weird slimy aftertexture and I don't like the hair either.

I am not overly fond of persimmons but I only had my first one last fall, so I'm working on acquiring a taste. I have never had a durian but I've heard about them. I do not like coconut, if that counts.

Martin said...

Sarah, it's no big deal but just to keep the record straight I love fuyu persimmons. It's the other kind of persimmons I don't like. The ones you have to let sit around for about a month before you can eat them.

Laurie said...

Do be careful of citrus, they are very acidic and dissolve teeth! I know several people who did serious damage, including total loss of teeth with citrus.
I now call acid fruits the Seductive Assassins because one will feel incredibly high energy and well being, as they quietly take one's teeth!

oranges - pineapples - sour apples - sour plums - lemons -
grapefruits - sour peaches - limes - tangerines - sour
grapes - tomatoes

^^^^^^^^^^^ list of "acid fruits" from:^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
http://www.thefruitpages.com/acidsweet.shtml

Don't believe it?
Rub your teeth together, they will feel smooth.
Now, eat an orange section, rub again.
Your teeth will now feel like sandpaper because their
surface has been etched by the organic acids; e.g. citric,
malic, tartaric, and other acids.

These dissolve calcium crystals out of the protein matrix,
which then collapses due to loss of its internal crystal
support.

IF one HAS to eat them:

1> juice them and drink with a straw, as this will keep the acid juice away from the teeth, or better yet--
2> store the juice in the fridge with a piece of coral rock in the jar. Coral is calcium carbonate, CaCO3, and will dissolve calcium into the juice and the carbonate will neutralize the acids.

Martin, you talkin' about hachiyas? The astringent ones that sit around for a month? Those are MY FAVORITES! How dare you not like them. :) I think I like them better than fuyu! I lived on them for days last fall. I miss them so much. I'll give one of my 4 another try if you give hachiyas another try this fall. :)

Amy, what do you say I attempt to bring some frozen durian to the BFM 09? HAHAHA. Everybody would hate me.

Samantha said...

I hate, hate, HATE cantaloupe. It's nasty. And I really hate when people make fruit salads, because they always put cantaloupe in it, and then I can't eat it, because anything that comes into contact with cantaloupe automatically, and without fail, assumes its taste. Tres gross.

I also hate grapefruit, they're so bitter (and I love tart things, I mean I eat plain lemons, all by themselves, for godssake). I just can't get past the grossness.

I also dislike (though not much as much as the previous two) honey dew melon. It's too similar to cantaloupe for me to ever think it tastes good. Ick.

Other than those three, I can't think of any fruits I dislike.

My three favorite fruits are watermelon, strawberries, and tomatoes.

Sarah said...

Thanks for sharing, Samantha. I will throw in votes with you on the watermelon and tomatoes!!!
